Ubuntu Linux is a free Debian based Linux distribution sponsored by Canonical Ltd which is owned by Mark Shuttleworth the former owner of Thawte. Ubuntu features a fast and easy to use installer and is based around the Gnome window manager. KDE fans can now install a derived version of Ubuntu with the KDE desktop manager called Kubuntu.
The distributors intend to have a regular release schedule with releases approximately every 6 months and intend to have technical and security support updates for 18 months for each release at no cost to the end user. Ubuntu currenty supports x86, amd64 and ppc architectures and intends to support more in the future.
Because it is based on Debian, Ubuntu Linux uses the deb package format and can be updated using the Synaptic package management tool. Synaptic is a GUI based tool for installing, updating and deleting installed packages on the system.
